Glamping in the Heart of a National Park in Shimane

Luxury camping in the shadow of Mt. Sanbe.

Journey to Shimane

Shimane’s pastoral scenery and meticulously preserved townscapes offer a glimpse of Japan from a bygone era, where life moves at a slower pace and traditions are preserved for generations. From the spirituality and rich history of Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine to charming hot spring towns seemingly frozen in time, Shimane is a vast treasure trove of authentic, traditional culture.

It is no secret that we feel Shimane is one of the best places in all of Japan to experience the country’s rich culture without the crowds. Discover the vivid performing art of Kagura through our 4-day Kagura Performance Tour or explore the region’s historic towns and landscapes in our 3-day Traditional Culture Tour. If you are passionate about high-quality crafts, our 4-day Artisan Craft Tour is an opportunity to visit traditional family workshops, meet the makers, and try your hand at fascinating crafts like indigo-dyeing or blacksmithing.

Glamping on a Volcano

To enhance your Shimane experience, we recommend staying at our wondertrunk & co. glamping site at the heart of the national park surrounding the dormant Mt. Sanbe volcano. Operated by our passionate local team, staying in one of our comfortable tents supports efforts to regenerate the area in an environmentally-friendly way.

Located in a verdant field with stunning views of Mt Sanbe, our spacious luxury camping tents feature two double beds, indoor seating, and an outdoor deck area to enjoy the scenery. Our community tent is a great place to meet other travelers and learn more about the region. For dinner, cook your own barbecue on your tent’s outdoor deck using fresh local ingredients delivered by our team. For breakfast our team will bring you a basket of locally made breads and baked goods.

Mt. Sanbe

At 1,126 meters, Mt. Sanbe is the highest point in the Iwami region, offering spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding area, all the way to the sea. There are multiple hiking trails that lead to Mt. Sanbe’s summit in two to three hours. The area is also perfect for exploring by e-bike, with many path winding through fields, lakes, or even hidden shrines and temples.

Kagura Under the Stars

Donning vibrant costumes and lifelike masks, Iwami-style kagura dancers twist, twirl, jump, and dance in reenactments of some of Japan’s most enduring myths. Travelers staying at the glamping site have the unique opportunity to witness a kagura performance on the outdoor stage erected just beyond the tent area. Mt. Sanbe and the clear starry skies create the perfect dramatic backdrop for the vibrant myths and legends brought to life by skilled kagura performers dancing in the firelight.
